LSV REQUIREMENTS
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) established a directive requiring all hybrids and electric cars, including LSVs, to produce pedestrian warning sounds audible over ambient noise when traveling at speeds below 18.6 mph (30 km/h). The overarching goal is to improve proximity awareness and reduce bodily injury due to electric vehicle noise and the risk of collision with visually or audibly impaired people. An LSV (legally permitted on public roads at speeds up to 25 miles per hour) is required by law to make a noise whenever the gear selector is in either the forward or reverse position.
Forward position.
From 0 MPH to 18.6 mph
The sound is allowed to stop once the vehicle exceeds 18.6 mph.
Reverse position.
To comply with NHTSA rules, all LSV vehicles need to be installed with a pedestrian alert sound generator.
